History on Lourdes Medals / Souvenir Charms, Bernadette Soubirous, a young peasant girl in Lourdes, France. In 1858, she reported multiple apparitions of the Virgin Mary at the Grotto of Massabielle.
From the latter half of the 19th century (“post‑1858”) Lourdes became a pilgrimage site, and devotional items including medals, crosses, rosaries, etc. became in demand. These items were sold at Lourdes and by devotional shops elsewhere.
Early medals were often simpler, cast bronze or silver, with relief imagery of the grotto, Bernadette kneeling, sometimes with inscriptions. As techniques improved and demand grew, enamel, color, higher quality metals, and more decorative styles were introduced.
