History about margarine figurines: In 1950, Fri-Homa—one of Germany’s leading margarine brands owned by Fritz Homann—began adding small prizes to its packages to build customer loyalty. The first plastic figures were produced by the SIKU toy company, run by Homann’s friend Richard Sieper, and the idea quickly spread across the industry. These prizes were typically molded in a light cream polystyrene to resemble miniature ivory carvings. The practice ended in 1954, when German producers agreed to stop including in-pack toys. For many post-war children, these small figures were their only toys for years.
