Robert Banks established his first photographic studio in Uppermill (Saddleworth) in 1867. By 1873, he had relocated to Manchester, residing at 73 Alexandra Road, Moss Side, while operating a studio at 73 Market Street. A remarkable example of Victorian self-made success, Banks rose from humble beginnings as a woollen-mill piercer in Uppermill to become one of Manchester’s most respected photographers—eventually earning the prestigious distinction of Photographer by Royal Appointment.
