Elite Photo Co: The Elite Photo Co. was a leading photographic studio in Brisbane during the late Victorian era. It operated under several names between 1884 and 1889, and again from around 1906 to 1911. The studio was founded by Edward Thomas Border Hutchison (“Eddie” Hutchison), who arrived in Brisbane in early 1884. On May 24, 1884—Queen Victoria’s birthday—he leased premises at 8 Queen Street and opened the “Elite Studio.” By November that year, the business was trading as the “Elite Photo Co.”In December 1884, Hutchison briefly partnered with Swedish artist Oscar Fristrom, a skilled colorist and painter. The pair operated under the name “Hutchison, Fristrom & Co.,” though the business continued to trade publicly as the “Elite Photo Co.” The studio soon expanded, opening a branch in Toowoomba on Ruthven Street in June 1885. However, by late 1889, the company faced financial difficulties, leading to an auction of its equipment and business assets.
