Thomas Boxell: Thomas Boxell (1846–1939) was the son of a Brighton tailor who rose to become a professional photographer in the 1860s, working in both Brighton and Yorkshire. Born in Brighton in 1846, he was the second eldest son of Matilda Ann Combs and George Boxell, a tailor. By 1864, his uncle Charles Combs (also recorded as Combes) was running a photographic portrait studio in Preston Street, Brighton, and it is likely that Thomas learned his craft there as an apprentice. Just three years later, in 1867, at only twenty-one years old, Thomas Boxell opened his own photographic portrait studio at 40 North Street, Brighton, marking the start of his independent career.
