Richard Hardey, born in 1816, was a pioneering British photographer active in the mid- to late 19th century. He and his first wife, Hannah Maria Hardey (died 1865), were both involved in the fine arts – Hannah was a portrait painter. In 1868, Hardey acquired an existing photographic studio in Doncaster (from the photographer James Walker). After selling his Doncaster studio in 1882, Hardey returned to Hull and lived on Wellington Lane. He died there in 1889 at the age of 73 from bronchitis.
