John Stringfellow (1833–1882), born in Ecclesfield near Sheffield, became a professional photographer after first operating a mobile studio. He later established himself in Chesterfield before returning to Sheffield, where from 1871 he worked at a studio at 13a Fargate, having taken over the premises from photographer George Washington Unwin. Stringfellow died unexpectedly in early 1882, after which his wife briefly continued to run the studio.
