Crossley Westerman: The studio was founded in 1892 by Crossley Westerman in a former toyshop at West End, Hebden Bridge — a shop previously run by his mother. Westerman quickly built a reputation for high-quality portrait photography and became one of the first photographers in the area to use electric lighting in his studio. Following Crossley’s death in 1918, the business passed to his eldest daughter, Ada Westerman (later Ada Redman).
Alice Longstaff’s Era:
In 1921, a 14-year-old local girl, Alice Speak (later Alice Longstaff), began her apprenticeship at the studio under Ada’s guidance. Alice and her family purchased the business in 1935, and she went on to run it until her death in 1992, creating a vast and invaluable photographic record of local life throughout the decades.
