Real photo postcards by the Alva Studio on Cuba Street in Wellington offer a fascinating glimpse into early 20th-century New Zealand. The Alva Studio operated at 126 Cuba Street between 1912 and 1915, managed by photographers Leo Alva (1912–1913) and Albert Alva (1914–1915). Known for their high-quality portraiture, Alva Studio postcards are highly collectible pieces of ephemera. The studio captured both individual portraits and local street scenes.

History about Private Postcards (RPPCs): Family postcards became popular in the early 1900s, when advances in photography made it easy to print personal photographs onto postcard stock. Families used them to share portraits, celebrations, holidays, and everyday moments, combining a photograph with a handwritten message. During the “Golden Age of Postcards” (roughly 1890–1915), these photo postcards became an affordable and popular way to stay connected with relatives and friends across long distances.
