History Buxton Hardware: Mr Buxton arrived in Lyttelton in 1851 aboard the Castle Eden. Buxtons was founded in Nelson around 1854 by merchant Edmund Buxton as a general store on Trafalgar Street. After Buxton’s death in 1881, the Hamilton family took over the business and developed it into a major regional trading company, offering household goods, hardware, and agricultural products.
At the beginning of the 20th century, Buxtons played a significant role in the horticultural industry of the Nelson-Tasman region, particularly through its pioneering work in apple exports (first major shipments in 1910–1912). Much of this fruit came from fruit growers in Motueka, thus closely linking the town to the company’s export activities.
By the mid-20th century, Buxtons operated branches in Motueka and Tākaka, serving Golden Bay and the surrounding rural areas as a general store and purchaser of agricultural produce.
