Cyril John James Berry (17 April 1918 – 4 November 2002) was a British author and a leading figure in the modern amateur winemaking movement. Before becoming involved in winemaking, he worked as a newspaper editor in Andover, Hampshire, and later served as Mayor of Andover from 1972 to 1973. After the Second World War, the end of sugar rationing and changes to homebrewing laws in Britain led to growing interest in making wine and beer at home. Berry played a crucial role in organizing this emerging movement. In the 1950s, he helped found Britain’s first amateur winemakers’ association in Andover. The idea quickly spread to other counties, and by the early 1960s dozens of similar associations existed across Britain, with tens of thousands of members.
