Mercer: The Victorian-era individual with the surname Mercer associated with photography and Manchester may have been John Mercer (1791–1866). Although not a professional studio photographer, John Mercer was a highly respected experimental chemist and textile expert from Great Harwood in Lancashire, near Manchester. He was a prominent figure in the local scientific community and developed numerous innovations for the textile industry, including the Mercerization process, which bears his name.
