History of GEC: GEC was founded in 1886 by Gustav Binswanger (Byng) and Hugo Hirst as a wholesaler of electrical goods. Their 1887 catalog was the first of its kind in the electrical industry. In 1888, the company acquired its first factory, where it began manufacturing a range of electrical components, including telephones, electric bells, ceiling roses, and switches. One of GEC’s early production successes was the development and use of porcelain as an insulating material in switches, which was a significant innovation at the time.
