History on Luckyday buttons: “Luckyday” was a brand of mother-of-pearl and shell buttons, particularly well-known in the mid-20th century, manufactured by Muscatine Pearl Works, a company founded by O.A. Hammer and based in Muscatine, Iowa. The brand offered buttons on cards with vintage graphics that appealed to both sewers and collectors. The history of “Luckyday” buttons is closely intertwined with the history of mother-of-pearl and shell button manufacturing in the United States, an industry that flourished thanks to the freshwater mussels in the Mississippi River.
