The modern tradition of paper bead crafting can be traced to Victorian England. Wealthy and middle-class women often gathered socially to roll leftover wallpaper scraps tightly around knitting needles, creating long, narrow paper beads.

Beeswax and Decorative Curtains

Once rolled, the beads were polished with beeswax to protect and strengthen them. The beads were then threaded onto yarn or string and used primarily to create decorative door curtains and room dividers rather than jewelry.
