History on Tatting Shuttles: Tatting shuttles originated in the early 19th century, evolving from larger, coarser knotting tools used by sailors for rope work and the coarser fringe knots found in Egyptian tombs. The first shuttles were large and made of materials such as mother-of-pearl, and designed for thicker threads for creating decorative braids. While wooden shuttles were likely the first material used for tatting, natural materials like horn offered a warm, pleasant feel and unique patterns, which modern artisans still appreciate.
