History on French Ivory: French ivory refers to celluloid, the first thermoplastic material invented in the 1860s and used to imitate natural ivory due to its cost and limited availability. This material, made from nitrocellulose and camphor, was popular from the late 19th to the early 20th century for the manufacture of decorative and functional items such as combs, jewelry, and chests of drawers. It differs from real ivory in its less irregular, parallel grain and its characteristic camphor odor when warm.
History on Tatting Shuttles: Tatting shuttles originated in the early 19th century, evolving from larger, coarser knotting tools used by sailors for rope work and the coarser fringe knots found in Egyptian tombs. The first shuttles were large and made of materials such as mother-of-pearl, and designed for thicker threads for creating decorative braids.
