John Ernest Middlebrook (often cited as “J. E. Middlebrook”) — a prominent Victorian/late-Victorian photographer in South Africa, particularly in Kimberley and later in Durban. Middlebrook was born on 6 April 1863, in Pietermaritzburg (South Africa) to parents originally from New Zealand. His photographic career in Kimberley is documented as active around 1888 to 1894 at his studio: “The Premier Art Studio” located on Du Toitspan Road, Kimberley.
