The Swiss Bircherraffel – A taste of Swiss food history

The Bircherraffel is a traditional Swiss grater used to prepare the ingredients for Bircher muesli, the famous Swiss breakfast dish created by Swiss physician Dr Maximilian Bircher-Benner in the early 1900s.

Before modern kitchen appliances, Swiss families used a Bircherraffel to finely grate apples and other fresh ingredients to create a healthy and nourishing breakfast. This simple kitchen tool became an important part of Swiss household traditions.

At Willow Bank Heritage Village, we celebrate everyday objects that tell the stories of the past. The Bircherraffel is a wonderful example of Swiss ingenuity and the traditions passed down through generations.
