The Story
The Trichel (Trychel) is a traditional Swiss cowbell, strongly connected with Alpine farming and rural life. Larger than everyday cowbells, trychels are worn by cattle, especially during the seasonal movement of animals between mountain pastures and villages.
The deep, distinctive sound of the trychel has become an iconic symbol of Switzerland’s alpine heritage.
Swiss Tradition
For generations, Swiss farmers have used bells to help locate cattle grazing on mountain slopes. Each bell has its own unique sound, allowing farmers to recognise their animals.
Trycheln is especially associated with Alpabzug (the ceremonial descent of cattle from the high Alpine pastures), when decorated cows return to the valley after spending the summer months in the mountains.
The sound of bells ringing through Alpine villages is a celebration of the changing seasons and a connection between people, animals, and the landscape.
