Pope Pius XII (1939–1958) had a complex and controversial pontificate that coincided with World War II and the Holocaust. He was praised both for his assistance to Jews and criticized for his perceived silence and inaction in the face of Nazi atrocities. Born Eugenio Pacelli, the pope was a skilled diplomat and conservative theologian who worked to uphold the authority and interests of the Church. This led to efforts to save some Jews, while his critics argued for stronger public condemnation of Nazi actions. During his pontificate, he also addressed the consequences of the war, the rise of communism, and championed human rights, although his stance on totalitarianism and his conservative theological positions remained influential.
