The story of Kirby, Beard & Co. began around 1743 in Gloucester as a pin manufacturer founded by William Cowcher. Later, under partners such as Robert Kirby and George Beard, the company developed into the city’s oldest pin manufacturer. In 1853, the company moved to Birmingham and produced the popular “Kirbigrip” hair slide before developing into a renowned manufacturer of various jewelry items. The company name, Kirby, Beard & Co., was used until 1970.
