Edward Ireland was a professional photographer in Edinburgh from 1885 to 1892.
His early cards de visit list studios in Edinburgh and Manchester, and also Edinburgh, Hanley, Liverpool, and Manchester. His later visiting cards list these studios as well as Birmingham, Blackburn, Bradford, Burney, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, and Manchester. At 18, he was an iron founder, at 28, a town clerk, but by 38, he was a photographer, employing five men, two women, and one boy! Edward Ireland also owned seven houses on a plot in the district which he bequeathed in Trust to his son Charles and his family. Three of his children also became photographers. The eldest, Elizabeth, also printed the photographs.
