Johannes Ganz was born on February 26, 1821, in Bülach (Canton of Zurich), Switzerland. In 1843, he opened his own lithography workshop in Zurich. Around 1859, he learned photography from the French traveling photographer Choquet. In 1860, he furthered his photographic training in Munich (with B. Winsel) and possibly in Paris (with André Disdéri), ​​focusing on advanced portrait techniques. In 1867–1868, he commissioned or built a commercial and residential building at Bahnhofstrasse 40 in Zurich. He was the first to build a commercial building at Bahnhofstrasse 40.
