M Blizard: M. Blizard was a Victorian photographer based in Taunton, though the main figure behind the name appears to have been John Blizard, assisted by his wife, Sarah Ann Blizard (née Cosnett). Born in 1826 in Pershore, Worcestershire, John married Sarah Ann Cosnett of Taunton in 1846. He began his career working with photographer John Webber before setting up his own studio.
By the 1860s, Blizard was established as a professional photographer, operating from 52 East Street, Taunton, as recorded in the 1871 census, and also from 54 East Street around 1865. Photography was very much a family business: Sarah Ann was also listed as a photographer, and their eldest daughter, Annie Blizard, worked as a photographic retoucher. The studio employed one boy and two girls.
