Google on history of British Army Officer’s Pips: British Army officer rank “pips” (stars or badges) are stylized versions of the star of the Order of the Bath, one of the four British Orders of Chivalry. These “pips” are used on the shoulders of British Army officers to indicate rank, with the number and type of pips corresponding to different levels of seniority. The Order of the Bath itself was founded in 1725 by King George I, and the star features three crowns in the center, symbolizing the union of England, Scotland, and Ireland
