On display at Willow Bank Heritage Village is a traditional Münger Tracht from the Canton of Bern, Switzerland. This beautiful folk costume belonged to Adelheid (Neukomm) Grieder, known as Heidi, and represents a treasured piece of Swiss heritage.
In Switzerland, each region has its own traditional tracht, reflecting local history, culture, and craftsmanship. The Münger Tracht is a distinctive Bernese costume, recognised for its elegant design and detailed workmanship.
History of the Münger Tracht
Unlike many Swiss folk costumes that developed gradually over generations, the Münger Tracht was designed in 1927 by Bernese artist Rudolf Münger (1862–1929). Münger was passionate about preserving Swiss traditions and studied historical artwork, clothing, and patterns to create a costume that represented the character and identity of the Bernese region.
The costume features a beautifully embroidered Göller (collar), a fitted bodice, delicate silver jewellery, and a traditional hat decorated with fine horsehair lace. These details highlight the skill and craftsmanship found in Swiss traditional clothing.
