Swiss Leiterwägeli – A Traditional Swiss Handcart
The Swiss Leiterwägeli is a charming example of traditional Swiss craftsmanship and everyday life. These wooden handcarts were used by families for carrying items, helping with small tasks, and transporting goods around villages and farms.
The name “Leiterwägeli” comes from the German words meaning a small cart with ladder-like sides. The raised wooden sides helped keep items secure while being moved.
For children, Leiterwägeli also became a much-loved toy, offering hours of imaginative play and a connection to the practical traditions of earlier generations.
At Willow Bank Heritage Village, our Swiss collection celebrates the objects that tell the stories of daily life, family traditions, and the skills passed down through generations.
