  • 2 quarts fine salt (dissolved in warm water)

  • 1 lb rice meal (boiled in water to a thin paste)

  • 1 lb whiting

  • ½ lb glue (dissolved in warm water)

  2. Strain the slaked lime through coarse cloth.

  3. Add the dissolved salt to the strained lime.

  4. Stir in the rice paste, whiting, and glue solution.

  5. Mix everything thoroughly and let it stand covered for 2-3 days, stirring occasionally.

  6. Heat the mixture before use.

Application Tips:

  • Use goggles to protect your eyes.

  • Wear gauntlet gloves to protect your hands.

  • Apply the wash generously for best results.

Eco-Friendly Whitewash Recipe

Ingredients

  • 6 lbs hydrated lime (Type S) – natural mineral, low environmental impact when handled safely

  • 4 lbs fine salt – natural preservative

  • 1 lb rice flour or cooked blended rice paste – biodegradable binder

  • 1 lb whiting (calcium carbonate) – natural chalk, eco-safe

  • ½ lb natural hide glue OR replace with 1 cup flour paste (for a vegan alternative)

  • Water

Instructions

  1. Slake the Lime:
Slowly add the lime to about 2-3 gallons of boiling water, stirring carefully to avoid splashing. Do not add water to lime directly.

  2. Strain:
Strain through coarse fabric to remove clumps.

  3. Prepare Salt Solution:
Dissolve the salt in 2 quarts of warm water.

  4. Make Rice Paste:

    • Rice Flour: Boil with water to create a thin paste.

    • Cooked Rice: Blend with warm water until smooth.

  5. Make Binder:

    • For non-animal-based binding, cook 1 cup flour with 2 cups water to a paste.

    • Otherwise, dissolve hide glue in warm water.

  6. Combine:
Mix lime, salt, rice paste, whiting, and glue/flour paste thoroughly.

  7. Rest & Stir:
Cover and let sit for 2-3 days, stirring occasionally. Warm slightly before applying.

Eco-Friendly Application Tips

  • Apply with a natural bristle brush.

  • Wear biodegradable gloves or reuse old ones.

  • Use compostable drop cloths or old sheets to catch drips.

  • Whitewash is biodegradable — excess can be disposed of in soil (away from plants sensitive to lime)

Modern Durable Whitewash Recipe for Poultry Houses

Materials Needed

  • 12 cups (about 6 lbs) of hydrated lime (available at hardware stores)

  • 8 cups (about 4 lbs) of fine salt

  • 1 lb of rice flour or cooked rice blended into a paste

  • 1 lb of whiting (calcium carbonate, from art or hardware stores)

  • ½ lb of powdered glue or a small bottle of liquid hide glue

  • Water

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Lime:
Carefully mix the lime with boiling water (about 2-3 gallons) in a large, heat-safe container until it forms a smooth paste. Always add lime to water, not the reverse, to avoid splattering.

  2. Strain:
Strain the lime paste through a coarse cloth to remove lumps.

  3. Dissolve the Salt:
Dissolve the salt in 2 quarts of warm water.

  4. Prepare the Rice Paste:
If using rice flour, boil it with water until it forms a smooth, thin paste. If using cooked rice, blend it with water until smooth.

  5. Dissolve the Glue:
Dissolve powdered glue in warm water as directed on the package, or warm liquid glue until smooth.

  6. Combine:
Mix the strained lime, dissolved salt, rice paste, whiting, and glue together thoroughly.

  7. Rest the Mixture:
Let it sit covered for 2-3 days, stirring occasionally. Heat slightly before using for better adherence.

Safety Tips

  • Wear old clothes and rubber gloves, as the lime can damage fabric and irritate skin.

  • Use safety goggles to protect your eyes from splashes.

  • Apply liberally using a sturdy brush.
