History Milk Caps: In New Zealand, milk bottle lids evolved from printed cardboard discs in the 1950s—introduced during the rise of glass bottle home deliveries—to the iconic aluminium foil caps that followed. The lids often had the day of the week printed on them, helping households identify which day’s milk they were using, rotate bottles so the oldest was used first, and reduce the risk of drinking milk that had been sitting too long. Today, they are considered collectible pieces of Kiwiana.
