Gottlieb Shroeder opened his Dublin studio in 1862 and remained active in the city’s photographic business until the early 1880s. Early business cards are often plain and simple, giving them a contemporary feel compared to the more elaborate backgrounds and props of later studio portraits. In his advertisements he claims to have been a photographer for the royal families of England, Germany and Russia. Gottlieb Schroeder and his family lived in various locations around the city, primarily on the south side, including houses on Camden Street, Harold’s Cross, and Rathmines. Gottlieb finished his Dublin years with a studio on O’Connell Street before moving to Doncaster sometime in the 1880s, where he lived at 15 Frances Street. His studio was located at 15 Hall Gate Street and 9 High Street. He died in Doncaster in 1897 at the age of 64.
