The Smurfs are comic book characters created in 1958 by Belgian artist and author Peyo (Pierre Culliford, 1928-1992) as goblin-like supporting characters for his comic book series Johan et Pirlouit. This was published in Spirou Magazine at the time.
The Smurfs quickly became popular. First in Europe and the final breakthrough to international success came in 1981 in the USA.
