Wood ash to wash clothes

It sounds bizarre to wash clothes with dirty wood ash, doesn't it?

Wood ash for washing was used till early 20thCentury. Soapsuds were made of wood ash or other plant material (Salsola kali, soap wort) or soap. The wood ash from hard wood was used, e.g. beech wood. I have read somwhere that apple wood ash made the whitest clothes..

If you are prepared to put in the work it is still possible to use wood ash for washing.

On the internet you will find instructions how to wash with wood ash.

This is a posser (sometimes called ponch or punch).
It is used to pump the soapy water through the laundry when hand washing. I remember my mother used one of them. Find out more on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posser
